Walk the Sacred Paths of Japan’s Buddhist Mountain
Experience the spiritual landscape of Koyasan through a guided walk along historic pilgrimage routes and sacred temple grounds.
Founded in the 9th century by the Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi), Koyasan has been one of Japan’s most important religious centers for more than 1,200 years. The mountain was intentionally created as a sacred Buddhist complex, where temples, forests, and pilgrimage paths form a unified spiritual landscape.
For centuries, pilgrims have traveled through the mountains of Wakayama to reach this sacred site. Walking these paths allows visitors to experience Koyasan in the same way pilgrims once did — not just as a temple destination, but as a spiritual journey.
This private guided experience allows you to explore Koyasan through historic walking routes, temple sites, and sacred forest paths.
Depending on your interests and available time, you can choose from several pilgrimage-style walking routes.

The Spiritual Meaning of Koyasan
Koyasan was founded in 816 by the monk Kukai, who introduced Shingon Buddhism to Japan after studying esoteric Buddhist teachings in China.
Rather than building a single temple, Kukai created an entire sacred mountain environment dedicated to Buddhist practice. Temples, forests, and pathways were designed as part of a spiritual landscape where monks could study, meditate, and practice ritual.
Walking through Koyasan allows visitors to experience this landscape as pilgrims once did — gradually entering a sacred world hidden within the mountains.
Pilgrimage Traditions
For more than a thousand years, pilgrims traveled to Koyasan from across Japan.
Along the Choishi-michi pilgrimage route, stone markers known as choishi were placed to guide travelers toward the sacred mountain. Each marker indicated the remaining distance to the temple complex.
Many of these historic markers remain today, allowing modern visitors to follow the same route used by pilgrims centuries ago.
During the walk, your guide will share stories about:
- the development of Koyasan as a Buddhist center
- the meaning of pilgrimage in Japanese religion
- the symbolism of sacred mountains in Buddhism
- the historical role of Koyasan in Japanese spiritual culture
