丸山古墳 石棺

This ancient tomb is located on a terrace on the west bank of the Kishigawa River in Kinokawa City, Wakayama Prefecture.

A circular tomb built in the 5th century. The overall size is 42 x 41.5 x 6.3 m. A sarcophagus with a length of 2.0 m and a width of 0.8 m made of crystalline schist slabs is exposed. A small stone chamber called an antechamber is attached to the side. Human bone fragments, pottery fragments, and jewels were unearthed from the inside of the sarcophagus, iron swords and armor from the antechamber, magatama beads from the excavation site, and a large number of iron swords and iron bowls were unearthed from the burial mound.

You can see inside through a hole that is thought to be the site of a grave theft.

Researchers believe that this tomb was the burial site of a samurai-like figure associated with the Yamato government and the Kii chieftain, as a large amount of iron weapons were buried there, as well as a valuable iron pot.
