World Heriage Sites in Wakayama

Koyasan

It is a quasi-plain surrounded by mountains at elevations of 1,000 meters or less. Kongobuji Temple, the head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and Koya-cho, the town in front of the temple, are located here. In 2004, the area was registered as a World Heritage site (cultural heritage) as part of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.

Kumano Kodo

Pilgrimage routes to the three mountains of Kumano. The route of pilgrimage follows the Kii mountain range, and there are various routes. In 2004, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) as “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.
